Sex Myths

Think you know everything there is to know about nookie? Make sure you don't fall foul of the sex myth…

A woman can't get pregnant if she's on the pill/ he's wearing a condom
We don't want to give you nightmares about nappies, but you need to remember that no contraception is 100% safe. You've got to use it properly. If you've been sick from that dodgy curry (yes, we know it definitely wasn't the 5 pints, 4 vodka redbulls…) you may have lost your pill - take extra precautions or you could find yourself expecting more than a hangover. Same applies if your condom breaks, comes off or leaks. Read the leaflets carefully, ok so you're not going to stop for a study sesh in the throws of it, but make sure you know all about what you're using and how it works.

A woman can't get pregnant if she has sex during her period
As men enjoy reminding us, women are not predictable - and neither are their reproductive systems. Risk of pregnancy is based on when a woman ovulates, and that's not always easy to predict. Sperm can stay alive and active in the reproductive tract for up to seven days (the average is three days) and the egg survives for 24 hours after ovulation. So it's possible for a woman to get pregnant from seven days before ovulation to three days after it. Don't risk it.

I only have sex with people I know, so I don't worry about condoms
He may look pure enough for children's TV/ to be the seventh member of S Club (but hey, look where they found Jamie Theakston…). You can't tell if a person's got an STI just by looking at them, however closely you plan to study. And there's no guarantee your mate's less likely to leave you nursing nasties than a stranger you've pulled in a club. ALWAYS USE A CONDOM.

Condoms take away all the feeling
In some enjoyable scientific tests, it's been proven that condoms only take away a 'minute' level of sensation associated with sex. In fact, if you shop around you'll find some that can increase pleasure. InSpiral do some double spring action condoms with curves that reach all the right places. ( www.inspiralcondoms.tv ), and Durex bring out new varieties all the time.

Erections need dealing with otherwise it's bad for a bloke
What's the story with the morning glory? A man can have several spontaneous erections during the night, especially during REM sleep and when he wakes up - these are usually nothing to do with being aroused. Men don't explode if their erection isn't relieved and most men will take the situation in hand if it needs sorting.
