Big business has finally begun to acknowledge that force to be reckoned with, student power - spending power, that is. Whilst they're known for pleading permanent poverty, student cash splashing is actually estimated at about £10bn a year.

What better way for companies to claim their share, than getting students to promote their products? Bring on the student brand manager (SBM). More and more companies are recruiting students to check out what their peers really want. And what do the students get out of it? Well, there's the experience, contacts, references and, yes you can start listening again now, there's the almighty dollar.

Red Bull Student Brand Manager Scheme

  • What do I have to do?
    Manage and market the Red Bull brand on campus. Projects set for SBMs include brainstorming ideas with marketing teams, student sampling, liaising with the press and creating/organising events.
  • What skills do I need to have? You'll need to enthusiastic, intelligent, entrepreneurial and active.
  • How much will I be paid/what's in it for me?
    Pay is on a project completion basis rather than an hourly wage and depends on the project. You'll also get expenses, training and a mobile phone (subject to limitations).

Fresh Direction organises SBMs for brands such as Wilkinson Sword razors, Swan Stabilo and Staedtler pens provides a range of promotional services to other leading companies.

  • What do I have to do?
    Each programme is different but generally, you'll help brands improve their marketing to students by becoming the eyes, ears and mouth for the brand at your university. Typically, you might feed back on what students think of the brand, research attitudes to its competitors, advise on promotions, organise sampling, run competitions, organise local sponsorships, support local retailers and develop ideas for new marketing initiatives.
  • What skills do I need to have?
    You'll need excellent communication skills and a track record of making things happen. You'll be bright, dependable, open minded, and enthusiastic.
  • How much will I be paid/what's in it for me?
    Rewards vary, but will always involve some dosh plus other goodies, incentives and so on.

  • What do I have to do?
    Give away copies of Fresh Direction magazine on your campus, spread the word about the fab new website, plus be involved in special promotional projects.
  • What skills do I need to have?
    You need to be an excellent communicator with a good idea about marketing. You'll be confident, reliable and creative, with a good knowledge of your local area.
  • How much will I be paid/what's in it for me?
    A basic of £150 a term on completion of your projects, plus loads of promotional clothing to keep. You'll pick up some great experience to put on your CV.
